st andrews university: st saviour’s college

St Salvator’s College of the University of St Andrews was founded in 1450 by Bishop James Kennedy on North Street, St Andrews. Several of these original medieval buildings survive, including the college chapel, tower, tenement building (adjoining to the west of tower, actually older than the adjoining tower, but much restored) and the Hebdomodar’s building. The chapel was used as a parish church after the St Leonard’s college chapel was unroofed in the 1750′s until this arrangement was withdrawn byt the university. The 1450 college had cloister buildings to the north of the college chapel

St Andrew the First-Called

Designed by Robert Weir Schultz, c.1910-15 in a Byzantine style, this mosaic image of St Andrew, the apostle who was the first to be called by Jesus Christ, dominates the chapel dedicated to him in Westminster Cathedral. It was installed Signor Meo using tesserae from Venice.

St Andrew is shown in the stance of prayer and crucifixion, which was the means of his martyrdom, and he is flanked by deer, rose bushes and an olive tree. According to some traditions, he was crucified on an olive tree.

Tomorrow, 30 November, is St Andrew’s day but this year it is impeded because it falls on a Sunday.

St. Andrews #18 – R & A

Par: 4 / 354 yards
Surely, there is no more welcoming a home hole as the 18th at The Old Course, St. Andrews.Imagine 600 years of golfing history played out before you as you walk up the final hole at the world’s oldest course. St. Andrews is more than the home of golf, it is the essence of the game. This scene is marked by two significant elements: the large 18th green, and the building that is home to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. The 18th features a large putting surface which can be reached by a prodigious drive. Nearby is the first tee. Except for Swalcan Burn, the golfer faces little trouble on this hole. The Clubhouse was constructed in 1854, 20 years after King William IV conferred his patronage, and his royal title, on what had been the Society of St. Andrews Golfers, formed in 1754. The Club remains the ruling body for golf in most areas of the world, the exception being North America. The 18th at St. Andrews is far more than a finishing hole. It is a walk through time, history and tradition.
