The following are a few of the news items that appeared in the town’s newspaper of July 1911

BARKIP COLLECTION
For a small community like Barkip the amount collected for the celebration of the coronation was the abnormally large – no less a sum than £19-18s-6d which was all expended but a few shillings in treating the children, sports etc. The committee in charge of the event, wish to thank all subscribers to the fund for their munificence.
CORONATION SERVICE
A coronation service was held in Beith Parish Church on Sunday last at which the local company of Territorials, Boy Scouts, Instrumental Band, and various public bodies attended, besides a fairly large congregation. The Rev. I Grant Sutherland read the royal proclamation after which the national anthem was sung. The usual service followed.
BONFIRE ACCIDENTS
Two accidents occurred in connection with the bonfire at Fulwoodhead on Thursday night which fortunately are not of a serious nature. A man named Thomas Walker, polisher, fell into a disused quarry and sustained injuries to his head and legs. He was unobserved for some time, and had to be taken home in a conveyance. A lady was slightly hurt through falling over a fence.

PRESENTATION
On Wednesday evening the companions of Mr James Peat Millar, jun, met in a social capacity in Mr Malcolm Love’s, Reform Street, Beith. Mr Hugh B Dunlop presided. After a few remarks eulogizing Mr Millar, he called upon Mr Walter Wilson to make the presentation. In a neat and appropriate speech he handed over a suitcase and a purse of sovereigns at the same time expressing the sentiments of all present for his future success.
Mr Millar made a feeling reply and said he would cherish the gifts as a memento of happy days spent in Beith. Song and sentiment passed a few hours while selections were given on the gramaphone. The proceedings terminated with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Mr James Peat Millar, jun, photographer, Kings Road, Beith, leaves this week from London per SS Rimutaka for Australia. He is accompanied by Mr James Peat, plasterer of Beith, son of Mr William Peat, joiner.

OBITUARY

BEITH WELL
The well being sunk on Mr Kerr’s ground, Crummock, Beith, is now down about the regulation depth, 22 feet and it is said that there is a spring in it which yields an unexampled supply of pure water. If such turn out to be the case it will be a boon to the community. We have always been sceptical as to the quantity to be had from that scheme and even should there be quantity in this one we still have a doubt in the quality. The source of supply in all likelihood is the bog which lies above it and that bog receives the sewage of what is termed Snodgrass’s new houses.

DROWNED
On Thursday last while a man named Morrison and a companion were proceeding along the north side of Kilbirnie loch, they observed some clothing lying on the shore. Upon examining them they found that they were the clothing of a man, and they then looked towards the loch and discerned the body of someone floating face downwards and head towards the shore. Morrison retraced his steps to Beith and gave information to the police.
Sergeant McKay was soon on the spot and stripped his clothing and went in to where the body was floating, that part of the loch which is about 5 feet deep. There were a good number of people there and when the corpse was brought ashore it was at once identified as that of weaver named James Telfer, about 45 years of age. The deceased left his home on Wednesday about mid-day and no one seems to have seen him alive after that. It is supposed that he had gone in to bathe and was cramped. Deceased was married but had no family.
DEATH UNDER EXTRA-ORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES
On Thursday last, John Love, Hoodsyard, parish of Beith, was found by his servant woman, lying face downwards in the byre dead. It appears that the woman left the house to visit a neighbour between 2 pm and 3 pm and on returning about 5 pm found deceased as described. We understand that death was the result of a shot from a fowling-piece.
The strange feature in the case is that the gun was in the garden at least 15 yards from where the deceased for found and on the way there is a trough willed with water and that water was coloured red with blood as if deceased had bathed his wound in it. The charge which is said to have been in this gun a long time had entered his mouth carrying away part of the left upper jaw and cheek.
Dr Millar visited as soon as possible, but his services were unavailing. It is thought that had the doctor been at hand he could have saved his life, no vital part of the head being hurt. Hemorrhage being the cause of death.
