Anyone Explain?
Roger Griffith writes: Working at Spier’s Old School Grounds, the Youth Making Beith Better group and the YKB Youth Groups have both taken part in litter picks alongside the Barrmill Road over the last few months, clearing away all the rubbish and filling seven bin bags of rubbish. Now it’s as bad if not worse. Can anyone explain the reason why motorists feel free to throw away their rubbish for others to clear up on their behalf?

Roger Griffith, writes: Youth Making Beith Better (YMBB) are restoring and improving the old Nursery Garden at the Beith Community Centre. During the restoration a large number of ‘minibeast’ have been found. The group took the NAC Garnock Valley Ranger’s advice and set about building a ‘Bug Hotel’ or ‘Munchy Bug Restaurant’  to house these displaced creatures. Who know, perhaps in future they may even be invited to the Ugly Bug Ball!

Roger Griffith writes: Kilbirnie’s YKG group have put out a Geocache to commemorate the work they have done so far at the Spier’s parklands. The group planted out more wild flowers, cut back overhanging vegetation from the paths, created a ‘pallet of colours’ for their John Muir log books and carried out more work on the Geilsland Well. The group watched a swarm of Mayflies dancing in the sunshine above the old tennis lawns – a sight, that as the name suggests, can only be seen at this time of year. The day was finished off with a well earned BBQ. The group worked with the NAC Garnock Valley Ranger, as well as leaders Liz and Belle. A great time was had by all.
Spier’s Greenspace Sustainable Project The NAC Ranger Service, NAC Grounds Maintenance (Street Scene), and Youth Making Beith Better have teamed up with the Greenspace group to carry out a Sustainable Return on Investment (SRoI) analysis on the conservation work being carried out at the Spier’s parklands. The Spier’s SRoI project is one of four being trialed in Scotland, supported by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). The results will show all of the benefits to the communities, wildlife, the council, individuals, etc of the various voluntary works being done and will put a monetary figure on these, as a ratio of money spent to benefits derived.

Beith Bowlers

Beith Bowlers

President Robert F Clark, writes: The Glasgow versus Ayrshire bowling match took place on Thursday July 1. Bowlers from all over Glasgow descended on the 90 Ayrshire greens for this annual match which began in 1855 and is still eagerly awaited each year.

The visitors to Beith Bowling Club were Scotstounhill, Springburn, Riddrie, and Partickhill Bowling Clubs. Guesting for Beith BC were a rink from Saltcoats BC. President Clark welcomed all clubs to Beith and saying that he hoped they would enjoy their day. After breakfast it was down to some serious business of picking a horse. It’s traditional that each person picks a horse running that day. The serious punters looked at form whilst the rest picked nice names seem even making judgements after confirming that the runners had four legs. I think the local bookies were the real winners.

At eleven o’clock the teams took to the green. The rain was pouring down, four ends played and all retired inside for refreshments. After a light lunch and with the weather improving the teams took to the green again to complete the 31 ends.

After dinner, the Match Secretary, Kerr Bryson, announced the results. Beith had 3 rinks up and 1 down with the overall shots being Glasgow 84, Beith 128. Rink 4 was the highest up and the skip John Simpson kindly donated the winning sweep money to the ladies for all their hard work, although it was noticed that there was a tear in his eye as he reluctantly handed over the bawbees.

President Clark and all the visiting clubs thanked the ladies and bar staff for catering to them throughout the day, the green keeper for an excellent playing surface and their opponents for the hospitality. All in all, a great day of bowling was enjoyed by all.

President R F Clark welcomed the members for the Friday Wapinschaw. The winners were David McMillan (lead) and James Logan (skip). This game produced a rare occurrence, they won an end by the maximum 8 shots. It was a tradition in the club that the skip who lost an 8 had to wear a badge with an 8 on it until it occurred again. With no badge available we join in commiserating with the skelped losers, Brian Thompson and his lead Pat Longridge. Will they ever live it down?

And finally, On Wednesday July 7 Beith’s Top Ten bowlers first foray in the Ayrshire Top Ten competition ended in a narrow defeat against Ardeer Recreation BC. The game was a closely fought contest with Beith losing out by just 3 shots.

Darryl Armstrong, team coach, writes: Beith Juniors U10s were up for the very special fundraising challenging of climbing to the top of Ben Nevis on June 19 and it proved to be an outstanding success with the Beith team colours on display at over 3,000’. The boys would like to thank everyone who sponsored them. It was a great day out and the budding footballers really excelled themselves to reach the top of Britain’s highest mountain in a very fast time of 3hrs 30 mins. If only the parents who had come along for the walk had found it as easy. They took 5 hours to reach the top, and clearly were not nearly as fit as the young Beithians.

The boys managed to raise a whopping £1864.00, a commendable sum of money for club funds. They pass on their thanks to everyone who supported them on this memorable mountain climb on a wonderful day, with amazing views. Hopefully the experience will help them climb up the league next season! The fit footballing youngsters who made the epic climb were: William Ferguson, Jack Craig, Bradley Armstrong, Ross Mackenzie, Kieron Auld, Graeme Crawford, Jamie Hogg, Lewis Steele, Adam Graham, Callum Warnock, Cameron Miller, Matthew Sloan, Matthew Maclean and Ryan Brown. Congratulations to the boys on a wonderful achievement.

Friday Wapinschaw

Robert Clark, club president, writes: Vice president Tommy Ball welcomed a turnout of 18 members to the Friday Wapinschaw on the Beith green. The winners were the triple of Brian Thompson (lead), Derek Logue (second) and Jim McFadzean(skip).

The Ayrshire Cup is always an important date on the Ayrshire bowling calendar, and took place on Saturday last with clubs travelling all over Ayrshire. The visitors to Beith Bowling Club were Troon Portland, Rankinston, Irvine Fullarton and New Cumnock bowling clubs.

President R F Clark welcomed everyone and said that he hoped they would enjoy their day’s bowling and greet some old friends and make new friends.

After playing 21 ends in sweltering weather, apparently a good excuse, if one were needed, to retire inside for a cool beer every few ends. The result was Beith won two lost one and drew one, they also had a superior shot advantage of plus 17. After a great day of bowling all visitors expressed their thanks to the ladies who provided a first class buffet; Angela for her sterling work behind the bar; well deserved plaudits for the green and green keeper and everyone at the club for their hospitality.

Kilbirnie were the visitors for the final league game of the season. Kilbirnie required at least 5 points to win the league. They were able to achieve this by winning 3 games out of 4 with a higher shot advantage thus scoring an 8 points to 2 win. Congratulations to everyone at Kilbirnie BC on their success.

The Beith committee and members would like to congratulate the ladies triple from Dalry who won their district final and now will represent their club at the Scottish finals at Northfield Bowling Club. Well done Agnes, Jean and Marella.
